Lunchtimes at Listerdale
Our meals are provided by Rotherham School Meals Service, cooked on-site in our kitchens and served in the school hall.
Children from Foundation Stage 2 up to the end of Year 2 are entitled to Universal Free School Meals.
Children from Year 3 upwards are charged for school meals at a current rate of £1.90 per day, unless they qualify for Free School Meals because of personal circumstances. We use ‘Parent Pay’ as a payment and collection system.Parent Pay
If your child is eligible for Free School Meals because of your circumstances, even if they get Universal Free School Meals automatically, they will qualify for additional funding towards their education of £1600 (current rate) each year. This is called the Pupil Premium. This money is DIRECTLY spent on your child’s education. Please apply if you think you may be eligible. It can make all the difference to your child if you do.
We currently use the ‘Band System’ for dinners, which means that children choose their meal in advance and then are given a wristband to exchange for their menu choices at the serving counter. This system was carefully trialled in consultation with parents and pupils in 2014, so that children can be confident that they get their first choice from the menu.
The current menu is available here:
Children select their menu choice first thing in the morning and then are given bands just before lunch which match their choices. At the serving counter in the hall, they receive their main menu choice and then choose the accompaniments and dessert at the counter before sitting to eat their meal.
Children in Foundation always go in for their lunch first and are accompanied by Foundation Staff to help them, along with the School Meals Supervisory Assistants.
Children in other classes come in for meals on a rota of sittings.
All children are helped to do the following at lunchtimes:
- Make healthy choices.
- Recognise the importance of food in giving them energy for the rest of the day.
- Use a knife, fork and spoon.
- Eat dinner in a ‘family’ setting – around a table with friends and peers.
- Behave responsibly, politely and with good manners.
- Clear up their place ready for someone else to use it.
- Help the Lunchtime Staff in clearing and keeping the hall tidy.
Children will not be forced to eat all their dinner. Children will be encouraged to eat healthily. If you are worried at all about your child’s eating habits, we can help. Please get in touch.
Outside, children are supervised by School Meals Supervisory Assistants. In the event of bad weather, children are supervised in their classrooms instead. Some children have voluntary responsibilities at lunchtimes, or elect to attend particular activities. There is a wide choice of space and activity for every child in school. Again, if you have any questions, please ask.
